[Richard loves the movies, but not the cell phones. Turn them off!]

Hollywood movies are popular. They are mostly in English and some of them have fantastic special effects.

Movies can be anything from a stark, face-to-face reflection of reality, to a scary thrill ride to fantasyland. I imagine that the scary thrill rides to fantasyland are by far the most popular. Films can inform, entertain, advocate, irritate, and uplift.

When the end credits roll, the viewer can be left in a state of wonder, anxiety, bliss, disappointment, or gloom. Really good movies will remain with me as I make my way out of the theater as if I am still in the process of transitioning from one world to another. Depending on the movie, I may feel like someone is stalking me or a love is around the corner, waiting to be discovered and nurtured. After I saw One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest the first time, I was crazy for at least two hours.

Although the rest of the world is catching up, movies from the USA are still the dominant force in the film arts world. The movies showing in Taiwan are mostly American, even though Taiwan is more and more frequently making good ones.

Hollywood stars make a lot of money. They get millions of dollars for a movie, and live lives that most of us only dream about. It is as if they are works of fiction to amuse and inspire us. They can no longer live amongst regular folk, for as soon as they are spotted, they are hounded for pictures and autographs. We only want to be friends with them.
