[Except for about six months in Kaohsiung, Richard has spent 18 years living in Taipei.]

Living in a capitol is different than living anywhere else. When you are not from a major city, you notice that most of the TV shows are filmed in the capitol. The capitol becomes a fantasy land from TV and movies. It doesn’t seem real, and when you visit, it is a mystical experience. When you live in the capitol, however, the exceptional becomes commonplace. You get used to being in the limelight of the national media.

Taipei is the capitol of Taiwan. The government is centered here. Most Taiwan TV commercials are filmed in the capitol. The stories in the news are mostly from the capitol. It’s the place where everything happens.

film crew

You may see film crews for movies, TV shows, and commercials.

Unless you live in the capitol, the stories you see on the news are not directly relevant to your life. The places and people that they show on the news might as well be from a different world. The buildings, roads, and people are larger than life.

There is almost always something important and exciting going on in Taipei. Streets often get blocked off by protests next to the presidential offices and the legislature buildings. KMT and DPP (political parties) headquarters are often the scene of intense protesting. Sometimes you see policemen lined up along the road and you know that pretty soon somebody important will be passing through.

There are famous people in the capitol. You may never see them, but you know that they are there somewhere. You can almost smell them. Fortunes can be made and dreams fulfilled through a chance encounter. There is magic here.

Thank you for reading.
