[Richard has yet to come to his fashion senses.]

Fashions come and fashions go. Sometimes they are in, and sometimes they are out. Taiwan has had some unique, beautiful, and smart takes on popular style.

One memorable fashion fad was the witches’ shoes–shoes with sharply pointed toes. Over ten years ago they were popular because they were fashionable, and they were fashionable for reasons that can never be explained. Smart and self-aware women wore them. Some women just had to have shoes with exaggeratedly pointy-toes. You won’t see them so much anymore. They’ve gone the way of the Dodo shoes.

Young people are always fashion conscious.

A more recent fashion craze for women was opaque stockings. They come in all colors and levels of transparency. The old brown or black nylon stockings can now have lovely designs woven in them. In the wintertime, ladies can wear these to keep their legs warm and be fashionable at the same time.

For the men, there is the stereotypical Taiwan gangster fashions. That is the Hawaiian shirt, short khaki pants, and flip-flops, riding around on their scooter without a helmet and with a mouthful of betel nuts. Then there are the cement overshoes. Don’t assume that anyone wearing this style of clothes is a gangster. That could get you shot in the face.

Other fashions have run their course as well. There were many, I am sure, that I was never aware of, but those witches’ shoes keep preying on my mind. It is as if I am under some sort of enchantment. Thank you for reading.
