[Let's just say that you don't want to be around Richard when he sweats too much.]

“It's not the heat; it's the humidity.” That is what they say. Moisture in the air makes it seem much hotter than the temperature gauge indicates. The water comes from the ocean, and Taiwan is surrounded by oceans. Hence the humidity. Some shade and a cool breeze is what is called for here.

The humidity causes things to rust fast. Rust doesn't sleep, they say, but rust isn’t alive. It is an oxidation process, so of course it will not sleep. Water is a catalyst. It speeds the chemical reaction between the air and steel.

Water, water, everywhere!

Humidity is the enabler of life on this planet. Without humidity we would be left high and dry. But it's not all good. It spurs the growth of fungus.

The Taiwan air will slowly change the chemical composition of the body. The body will come to need to be constantly bathed in the moist and salty sea air. Dank air soaking into pores and orifices is an invigorating and emotional experience.

If I leave now for even a tiny march of days, my water-hungry skin will suffer much. I feel like a fish taken from its tank. My ankles are especially affected. The dried skin begins to flake and itch. I must put on moisturizing lotions or constantly scratch it. My ankles have become my Achilles’ heel. I am really stuck here, in more ways than one. Thank you for reading.
