In America, after getting married, the happy couple often takes a short vacation. It’s called a honeymoon.

 
Honey is sweet and sticky. The moon is peaceful and romantic.

In America, we also use the term honeymoon to refer to a moment of time when there is no harsh judgment. For example, a newly elected president may enjoy a short honeymoon with the national news media until they really start to get critical.

An old TV show in America was called The Honeymooners. It was about a New York City bus driver and his wife and how they lived back in the 1950s. When he was angry, he would threaten to hit her so hard that she would wind up on the moon. It was a funny show and a favorite for many.

A honeymoon is a good idea. Your life is going to be happy ever after. That’s what they all say. It is nice to get things off to a pleasant start. Maybe they will go to Niagara Falls, or maybe they will just check into a motor hotel and spend a night.

As many couples try keep their honeymoon plans secret, sometimes the bride and groom will drive away from the wedding reception very quickly, and the best man and his friends will try to follow and find out where they are going. It is a fun, half-hearted chase that doesn’t last very long. The best man will have conspired to decorate the groom’s car with “Just Married” written on the windows with shaving cream. They will tie tin cans to the back bumper so that everyone will notice them when they drive away.
